Cyber Security Engineer — Technical Lead / SME
Alexandria, VA · Hybrid $150,000 – $190,000 Clearance · Not required

Root Frameworks is seeking a highly skilled Cyber Security Engineer to provide mission-critical support to our enterprise clients, protecting their information systems and networks from cyber-attacks. This is a hands-on technical lead role — roughly 80% direct engineering, troubleshooting, and implementation, with technical leadership and coordination across the security team. You'll work across firewalls (security groups / RBACs), VPNs, Data Loss Prevention (DLP), IDS/IPS, web proxy, security tooling, and security audits, partnering with analysts, engineers, and field personnel throughout the security operations lifecycle. For the right person, this role can grow into a management position.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, manage, monitor, and upgrade the security controls and tools that protect enterprise systems and networks — identifying opportunities to automate repeatable operations tasks.
  • Design, configure, implement, troubleshoot, and maintain security technologies such as firewalls (security groups), endpoint protection tools (HBSS/Trellix), and SIEM platforms (Splunk).
  • Formulate systems and methodologies, respond to security events, and assist in remediation of cyber security incidents such as system/network breaches and malware attacks.
  • Participate in change management so system changes maintain security compliance and don't introduce new vulnerabilities.
  • Conduct routine vulnerability scanning and assessment, provide formal and informal reports to technical teams, and track remediation to closure.
  • Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise to the security engineering team, coordinating with peer Technical Leads across infrastructure and application domains to align architecture and security controls.
  • Serve as the primary technical escalation point for complex or cross-domain security issues, mentoring junior engineers through collaborative troubleshooting and hands-on guidance.

Minimum requirements

  • Experience implementing and managing SIEM tools such as Splunk or similar platforms.
  • Experience with endpoint and network security technologies, including IDS/IPS, HBSS/Trellix, and related defensive security tools.
  • Expert with automation (e.g., Ansible, CloudFormation).
  • Demonstrated history of personally implementing, troubleshooting, and maintaining security technologies in production environments.
  • Proven ability to balance technical leadership with significant hands-on engineering work; strong attention to detail, an analytical mindset, and outstanding problem-solving skills.
  • Track current security advisories, bulletins, and industry threat intelligence to stay informed of vulnerabilities, threats, and trends.
  • BS degree and 16+ years of relevant experience, or MS degree and 14+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred qualifications

  • Additional security tools and processes such as IDS/IPS, VPN, GitHub, GitLab, and SonarQube.
  • Implementing and managing network and application firewalls, VPNs, web protocols, incident detection, incident response, and forensics.
  • Agile development environments; scripting/programming languages such as Python or PowerShell; DevSecOps pipelines and tools.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing technologies and services (AWS, Oracle, Google).
  • Knowledge of attack vectors such as XSS, injection, hijacking, and social engineering.
  • Health monitoring tools (SolarWinds) and using STIG viewers/tools to assess compliance with standards.
  • Experience with database systems, search engines, web applications, and Linux (Red Hat) and Windows environments.

DC Metro Area · On-site $125,000 – $160,000 On-call rotation

Root Frameworks is seeking a skilled Field Support Engineer to support a healthcare customer under a newly awarded contract, implementing solutions for new clients at their office locations. You'll play a critical role shaping each client's IT infrastructure and ensuring it aligns with their unique needs. Candidates must be able to participate in an on-call rotation that may include weekends and travel to DC Metro area locations within one hour of notification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site, hands-on support for devices and systems — installation, replacement, troubleshooting, upgrades, and maintenance — and diagnose and resolve system errors, hardware failures, and performance issues.
  • Escalate complex issues to higher-level technical staff as needed.
  • Install, configure, and test systems (servers, workstations, switches, datacenter management devices) at client offices and data centers, ensuring installations meet the standards set in each client's agreement.
  • Conduct system upgrades, patches, and preventative maintenance when appropriate or necessary.
  • Maintain readiness for emergency dispatch; while on-call, travel to DC Metro area locations within one hour of notification.
  • Maintain and update points of contact for all client sites, and modify site access procedures as needed.
  • Update asset and inventory logs for field systems and components, and keep field support tools, software, and replacement parts inventoried, tracked, and maintained.
  • Maintain detailed documentation for system designs, configurations, processes, and service records.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on IT infrastructure projects, providing expert guidance and technical leadership.
  • Interface directly with the Client Management Team to understand technical and compliance requirements and help deliver effective solutions.
  • Deliver basic end-user training on installed systems and new features when requested or necessary.
  • Apply knowledge of security hardening frameworks and regulations from CIS Control 4 and NIST SP 800-53 Revision 5.

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree with 1+ years. Additional relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience administering a wide variety of IT systems (Windows workstations, Linux workstations, rack servers, firewall appliances).
  • Experience with scripting technologies such as PowerShell.
  • Working knowledge of Unix or Linux-based operating systems.
  • Working knowledge of Distributed File Systems (DFS).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to complete complex projects with minimal direction.
  • Experience working independently to support a 24/7/365 customer environment.
  • Experience contributing to deliverables and meeting performance metrics.
  • Experience coordinating with senior management and customers.
  • At minimum, meet DoD 8140 / 8570.01-M IAT Level II certification requirements (Security+ CE, CCNA-Security, GICSP, GSEC, or SSCP, along with an appropriate computing environment certification). IAT Level III certifications are also acceptable (CASP+, CCNP Security, CISA, CISSP, GCED, GCIH, CCSP).

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with disaster recovery and backup/recovery within and across on-premises data centers and cloud environments.
  • Ability to analyze cloud migration approaches to support customer decision-making for effective, efficient migrations.
